On behalf of Writers On The River, hosted by the 501(c)(3) nonprofit Healing With Words, we would like to clearly reaffirm our commitment to providing an ADA-compliant, safe, and welcoming environment for all attendees which includes: readers, authors, vendors, volunteers, and guests with disabilities.
As confirmed by our venue, Embassy Suites by Hilton East Peoria Riverfront Hotel & Conference Center, the property is ADA compliant and provides:
Wheelchair-accessible entrances and public areas
Accessible guest rooms
Elevator access to all levels
Accessible restrooms
Wide corridors and clear egress pathways
Designated accessible parking
In addition, our event utilizes spacing tools to maintain appropriate service perimeters between tables. Standard layout practice includes approximately 2.5 feet between tables.
Most importantly, we value feedback directly from those with lived experience.
Author Cassie Colton, who manages health challenges and mobility considerations, shared:
“The aisles are wide and there’s plenty of room for scooters and wheelchairs to stop and people to walk around. The author had plenty of space to work.”
She also noted:
“Everything at the lunch was ADA easy. The after-party had plenty of space and I didn’t see anything wrong.”
Author Eileen Troemel , who has attended both as a reader and writer and uses a mobility scooter, shared:
“My table location was perfect. I had enough space for my mobility scooter. People were so helpful and kind about offering assistance.”
And perhaps most meaningful:
“I’ve been as a reader and as a writer and in both situations, I was treated with respect. This is so important. Sometimes people see the scooter and treat you differently — you guys just let me join in as I was comfortable.”
She also shared:
“I’ve been to multiple events now and WOTR is my favorite. You all make things easy for me.”
Additionally, we have made public announcements when service animals are attending and remind guests not to pet working service dogs.
We recognize that ADA compliance is about dignity, access, and thoughtful communication to all.. We remain diligent in providing safe flow of traffic and accessible pathways.
We welcome continued constructive feedback, as it helps us serve our community better.
